Writing-to-Learn/Think Mini-Grants

As part of our commitment to improve student writing, NMSU began offering mini-grants to faculty to incorporate informal writing as a tool to enhance student learning in content areas. The three-year program includes training, application and assessment. New cohorts of 6-8 members started the program each year, and participants received $1,000 stipends for each year they completed program requirements. The success of this program led to a scaled, departmental program, Writing-to-Think!, which is being launched Fall 2017. 

Writing to Learn

Three cohorts of NMSU faculty members participated in a pilot three-year faculty development Writing-to-Learn (W2L) program. The first year  included monthly workshops and training in writing-to-learn principles and application. In the second year, participants implemented strategies learned in year in a course they teach. Third-year participants assessed the impact of these strategies on student learning, and presented their findings at the NMSU Teaching Academy and at the New Mexico Higher Education Assessment and Retention (NMHEAR) annual conference.

Writing to Think

NMSU’s Writing-to-Think! program engages departments in a multi-year commitment to improve student writing by providing community, support and training to departmental faculty about how to use writing as an effective tool to solve learning challenges, enhance critical thinking and increase the level of student engagement with discipline content.

The Writing-to-Think (W2T) program is dedicated to the following principles:

  • Faculty control the curriculum
  • Developing students as writers is a shared responsibility
  • Writing is an effective tool to improve learning and foster critical thinking

The W2T program helps faculty redefine writing by transforming traditional concepts and thinking about writing to focus on understanding writing as a process (a means to an end) rather than a product (an end in itself).
